April Meeting: David Brower Center, Berkeley – April 21, 2012

BATW April Meeting
“Entrepreneurial Travel Publishing” – Presented by Lee Foster
David Brower Center, Berkeley
Sat., April 21, 2012 – 10 a.m.
Site for the meeting is the remarkable and new David Brower Center (www.browercenter.org), one of the “greenest” of modern LEEDS-certified architectural statements. The presentation will be in the Goldman Theater. Anyone writing on modern architecture and design will benefit from being aware of the David Brower Center, located at 2150 Allston Way in downtown Berkeley, near the University.
Host for the meeting is Visit Berkeley (www.visitberkeley.com). Visit Berkeley leaders Barbara Hillman and Dan Marengo will alert BATW members to the vibrant arts, culture, and culinary opportunities for travel editorial coverage on Berkeley. Packets given to attendees will encourage Berkeley-on-your-own exploration for the afternoon.
After the presentation, a casual buffet lunch in the foyer of the Brower Center will be catered by Back to Earth Organic Catering, the catering arm of the new and award-winning Gather Restaurant (www.gatherrestaurant.com). Gather is a tenant in the Brower Center mixed-use architectural vision and promotes sustainable, delicious food.
Following lunch, an optional tour will be offered of the Brower Center. The April meeting will be for members only; attendance is limited to the first 50 who sign up. Click here to register.
Transportation note: The Brower Center is a 5-minute walk from the Central Berkeley BART Station. Exit the station and walk south on Shattuck, then toward the University on Allston. Public parking is best in designated garages with flexible time. Two options are the Oxford Garage, 2165 Kittredge St. between Shattuck and Fulton, and the Allston Way Garage at 2061 Allston Way, between Shattuck and Milvia Street. Allow a little time for parking and walking to the meeting.
NEW PARKING INFORMATION:
We have learned that there is an additional event in Berkeley that day bringing in a lot of folks. UC Berkeley is having its Cal Day orientation for new students. This may make parking more difficult. Please allow plenty of time in your schedule for your transportation.
The easiest way to get to our event at the David Brower Center, 2150 Allston, is to arrive on BART at the Downtown Berkeley station and walk the one block up Allston to the Brower Center. The closest parking for those driving is right around the corner from the Brower Center, but that lot will fill fast. That is the Oxford Garage, 2161 Kittredge between Shattuck and Fulton. The larger downtown parking lot is the Allston Way Garage at 2061 Allston, between Shattuck and Milvia, just two blocks from the Brower Center. It is hoped that this lot will have sufficient parking. Street parking is congested and meters need to be fed in two-hour intervals.
If the downtown area is totally jammed up, the solution is to drive to the North Berkeley BART station at Sacramento and Delaware, park in their large lots, and take the BART back one stop to Downtown Berkeley.
