At the monthly BATW meeting on Jan. 15, 2011, Kim Grant from Sutro Media will talk about Apps. We will meet at the El Rancho Hotel in Millbrae. The historic hotel offers park-and-fly and is where scenes from The Right Stuff were filmed. And Nixon slept there, too.
Kim will answer the following questions as she provides a brief overview of the mobile application medium. She’ll also explain how to work with Sutro Media to develop your own application:
• How long does it take to develop an app?
• How much content is required and who owns it?
• How does the interface work?
• How much it costs to develop one
• How do authors get paid and how much money can they make?
• How can travel photographers get in on the action?
• How do I get started?
Kim Grant has authored some 45 guidebooks for Lonely Planet, The Countryman Press, Chronicle Books, Frommer’s, Fodors, Insight, Discovery, Berlitz, Rodale and Harvard Common Press. Grant currently writes Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard & Nantucket: An Explorer’s Guide (in production for its 9th edition and the best-selling guide to the region); Hawaii: An Explorer’s Guide (in its nascent 2nd edition); and Lonely Planet Santa Fe, Taos & Albuquerque. Since early 2006, Grant has been the travel Acquisitions Editor for The Countryman Press, where she has shepherded about 150 titles through to completion, and significantly expanded Explorer’s Guide, Great Destinations and Backroads & Byways titles. In late 2009, Kim transitioned from print to iPhone apps as the Acquisitions Editor for Sutro Media. From the inside out—as the author of Boston Essential Guide—Grant saw first-hand that Sutro Media provided a great and growing platform for her colleagues. She has since signed up over 400 apps (185 of which are currently available through iTunes). She’s jazzed every day about this new medium.
Sutro Media: is a new kind of app publishing company, one that bridges the gap between traditional print media and new media outlets.
