The Society of American Travel Writers (SATW) is seeking a Communications Manager to manage the new SATW website (www.SATW.org) as well as the calendar and various bi-weekly and monthly online magazines for members. WHO IS SATW?

Established in 1955 by a dedicated group of well-traveled, respected writers and public relations professionals, the Society of American Travel Writers’ (SATW) mission is to promote responsible journalism, provide professional development for its members, and encourage the conservation and preservation of travel resources worldwide.

The Society’s more than 1,100 members include journalists, photographers, editors, bloggers and online content providers, film lecturers, television and film producers, and travel industry public relations representatives. SATW is a nonprofit 501(c)(6) professional association. SATW members maintain the industry’s highest professional and ethical standards, and their dedication and experience represent the Society’s commitment to journalistic integrity and credibility. SATW comprises “Travel’s Most Trusted Voices.”

SATW members provide information on travel destinations and services in magazines and newspapers, travel books, guidebooks, websites, blogs, social media, and radio and television programs. SATW also offers trend-setting professional development as well as numerous opportunities to interact with members. SATW’s sought-after awards recognize outstanding work by travel journalists and photographers worldwide, and encourage conservation and preservation of historic sites and natural wonders. SATW’s community outreach programs promote the cultural and educational benefits of travel to youth, and support the Society’s belief that travel is a bridge between peoples that fosters human understanding.

The Society is comprised of four geographical chapters and three professional councils, each with their own governing bodies that service the entire membership. Additionally a Society-wide Board of Directors and Executive Committee govern the membership.

SCOPE OF POSITION

SATW is seeking a Communications Manager (CM) to oversee the internal and external messaging for the organization, including the following elements.

  • Create an overall communications plan (to be updated annually)
  • Create and/or oversee
  • Website content
  • Internal newsletters
  • Social Media
  • Discussion Boards
  • Provide or arrange for on-camera media coaching for SATW’s President and President-elect, as media spokesperson

We are looking for a media expert with strong social media skills to oversee different aspects of the organization to provide a cohesive and continuously updated information stream, and to assure that all communications support SATW’s brand positioning. Both members of SATW and non-members are welcome to apply.

The website updating includes adding and/or replacing copy, images, and keyword meta tags. The CM will work with the President and Executive Director to redefine our membership communications tools and to oversee the production of those in a timely manner.

This person will create calendars to push out appropriate and timely information to members for upcoming events and programs. The job may include some creation and dissemination of press releases and other materials promoting SATW from time to time, but this will not be the primary focus.

Priority audiences for SATW communications are current and potential members, travel industry and travel journalism professionals seeking information on members, potential sponsors, potential meeting and convention hosts, members of the media, convention and visitors bureaus, state and national tourism offices, and the general public.

BUDGET

SATW has budgeted $50,000 annually for these duties. The $50,000 includes the budgets for the production of the Traveler and the Enews ($15,500 and $9,000 respectively). The budget may be negotiable based on the applicant’s experience and that additional compensation would be considered for exceeding the terms of the contract.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

SATW will pay the CM on a monthly basis. The CM will report to the President and the Executive Director, and he/she will join in weekly update conversations. SATW will also pay for the CM to attend the annual convention to provide onsite communications services during the 5-day event, and to supervise interns at the convention, as well as to attend the board meetings in an ex-officio capacity.

TIMELINE

Applicant submissions are due July 15, 2015. Interviews will occur the following two weeks. Starting date is August 3, 2015.
