BATW Launches New Travel Stories Magazine

BATW is establishing the BATW Travel Stories magazine online at medium.com to offer a new outlet for our members’ best professional-quality work. We chose this platform because it is open, relatively easy to use, and does not carry advertising. According to Medium, the website is “where 170 million readers come to find insightful and dynamic thinking.”

We are inviting members to submit one travel-related article, essay, or memoir with photos for possible publication in each monthly edition. Please take a look at https://medium.com/batw-travel-stories to familiarize yourself with the publication’s look and feel. The site is slated to officially launch on May 1, 2021, with five initial articles contributed by the magazine’s editorial committee.

The committee will accept articles for the June 1 publication date from May 1–15. For every month thereafter, article submissions must be received no later than the last day of the month for publication two months’ later. (For example, submit no later than June 30, 2021 for publication on August 1, 2021.)

What is Medium.com?

Medium is an open platform where you can place your articles and photos. You create your own free account (personal site and profile) and use it to develop your own contingent of followers. Following is a link to the profile page of Barack Obama. This is David Laws’s page (though he doesn’t have quite as many followers).

Individuals and businesses can also create branded online publications, like our BATW Magazine. (Media analyst Smedian currently tracks more than 8,000.) If your work is accepted by one of them, it remains visible on your profile page and it will have a link to the other publication. (For example, on David’s page, you will note that his stories appear in The Bold Italic, CORE+ of the Computer History Museum, and others.)

Inclusion in the BATW magazine will require that members have a medium.com account on medium.com and have posted articles onto that account. Then you may submit an article from your personal site for consideration in the BATW Travel Stories magazine.

Basic membership is free and allows you to post as many articles, with as many photos as you wish, per month. But as medium.com survives without advertising through a subscription program, if you want to read more than three stories written by others per month, the basic fee is $5/month or $50/year.

As a potential workaround, you can create a free “Friend” link for each of your articles to distribute as you wish so that reading your story will not count against your friends’ 3-story limit.

By way of an illustration, “Friend Links” for the current stories are embedded in the titles below:

The Seychelles: Fantasy Travel to the Garden of Eden?” by April Orcutt

Welcome to London” by David Laws

How do I join and post an article on Medium?

Medium has instructions for setting up your own account at:  https://help.medium.com/hc/en-us/articles/225168028.

If there is sufficient interest, we will schedule an introductory tutorial Zoom session for BATW members to aid in navigating the site. However, using the link above, you could start writing and publishing stories (including photos) on your own page today.

Remember: If you post a story on Medium, it will count as being published, so editors who want first rights will not take it later. Be sure that you do not want to sell the story elsewhere before posting.

How do I submit a story for consideration for the BATW Travel Stories magazine?

If you are interested in participating, guidelines on how to submit your article can be found under the SUBMISSIONS GUIDELINES tab on the magazine home page.

Please read through these guidelines first before emailing any questions you may have. If you do have additional questions, submit them to: magazine@batw.org.

We look forward to working together to create a new, widely circulated presentation of our skills and experience as professional writers and photographers!
