Corporate Showcase: Dan Marengo, Visit Berkeley
In this edition of Corporate Showcase, BATW features Dan Marengo, BATW Corporate member and one of our hosts for the March 2018 meeting.
Length of time in this position: 9 years
Tell us a little about Visit Berkeley: Visit Berkeley is the destination marketing organization for the city. In addition to full spectrum marketing, we operate and staff the Berkeley Visitor Information Center downtown.
CVB area of coverage: Berkeley encompasses a total land area of 10.5 square miles with another 7.5 aquatic square miles.
#1 thing you want BATW members to know about Visit Berkeley: Visit Berkeley is your go-to resource for story research, fact checking, and field trips.
What travel story do travel journalists overlook? Berkeley’s Great Outdoors — the UC Berkeley campus is like a mini Central Park, great for day hikes, sightseeing and getting between Telegraph Avenue, Gourmet Ghetto and downtown. Two botanical gardens, one in Tilden Park and one affiliated with UC Berkeley, each with unique collections. Tilden Park Golf Course, with redwood-lined fairways less than 10 minutes from downtown.
What do you like best about your job? Broadening the perception of Berkeley beyond tie-dye and flower power. The creative challenge of communicating “vibe.” We like to say “Everyone’s A Little Berkeley.” Telling that story is not an inverted pyramid.
Your favorite travel destination: California! Nepal. Airports. That last one probably sounds crazy to professional travel journalists, but I love an airport’s energy and sense of anticipated adventure. Early in my career, I was fortunate to work with Cynthia Fontayne and her great roster of airline clients. That’s where it started.
