Erin Deinzer graciously stepped in to write the recap of our fabulous September meeting:

“To Blog or Not to Blog”

by Erin Deinzer

To blog or not to blog? That was the question raised at the September BATW meeting held inside the Presidio Trust’s historic building. Over 30 members and guests showed up to listen to bloggers Karen Misuraca (the meeting’s organizer), Inga Aksamit and Shelly Rivoli. Although their individual focus varies from cultural to outdoors to family, their travel-writing expertise and interests came together in a comprehensive overview of the industry. Whether you fell under the category of seasoned blogger or newbie to the scene, the practical tips and real-world experiences of the three panelists were helpful and insightful.

Afterwards a Q&A session was held with attendees adding their personal anecdotes. The takeaway for those of you unable to make it? A compilation of resources (see the list here) and the advice that while it’s always best to write about what you know—or are interested in knowing—it’s also important to create a specialized niche so you’ll become a “go-to” resource for others.

Following the presentation was a tour of the newly opened Lodge at the Presidio. Even though the 42-room inn has been running at near-capacity since it opened in early summer, management was nevertheless able to provide us with a view of two of the property’s rooms, as well as some background on the history of the property (a barracks for enlisted men, built by the U.S. Army in the 1890s) and the symbolism behind its interior decor.

Many thanks to Lisa Petrie, media relations specialist at the Presidio Trust, as well as her capable and accommodating support staff for providing the venue, and to the folks at the lodge for their willingness to lead our group tour and provide us with access to the stylish property.
