From the Board – June, 2014

The New BATW Publication

I’m excited about BATW’s new publication—working title: The Best of Bay Area Travel Writers and Photographers: Clips & Pics—that will show off members’ work. The idea is to produce a 4-color book with room for each member to showcase writing or photography, or both. All BATW general and provisional members, including both journalists and photographers, are invited to submit work.
I’ve already had a peek at some of the photos members have sent in: Alec Scott’s surprising giraffes in California, David Laws’ sinuous Salinas Valley landscape, Gary Singh’s Athens in the summer (it even looks hot!), Janet and Stu Wilson’s beautiful shots of the New Dungeness Lighthouse and the inside of the mission at San Juan Bautista, John Poimiroo’s architectural point of view at the beach on Dry Tortugas, Jules and Effin Older’s look at lively graffiti and staid sewing machines in Derry, John Montgomery’s colorful street clowns in Caracas, Nikki Goth Itoi’s evocative shots of board sports in Mexico, and Erin Van Rheenen’s haunting photos of graffiti in the old prison cells on San Lucas Island in Costa Rica.
This will be a fun project; after all, how often do we get to see each others’ work, let alone be published together? The magazine-style publication will be approximately 8.5” x 11” and formatted as a downloadable PDF as well as a print-on-demand book. It will be available to BATW members, including associate members, as well as to editors and the general public. I’m looking forward to seeing many more photos and articles in the next couple of weeks.
The submission deadline is June 15, so be sure to send your work before that date. Complete instructions are here. Meanwhile, I hope you’re finding time to enjoy all that summer has to offer—longer (and lazier?) days, BBQs with friends, and easy opportunities to travel in, write about, and photograph our always-inspiring world.
