Instagram for Travel Writers and Photographers

by Lee Daley

Instagram is a useful social media tool for travel writers and photographers for promoting their work, while also adding another outlet to their creative tool kit. Take a picture or video with your phone, and then customize it with filters and creative tools. Post it on Instagram and share instantly on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ or send it directly as a private message.

The ways to use Instagram are as varied as your needs and imagination. You can tailor your use to bring followers to your website, the latest destination you are visiting, your books or any other direction you choose. The key to success is creating a following of other Instagram users who are interested in what you have to illustrate in your Instagram portfolio Post often for best results.

Instagram’s immediacy lends itself to spontaneity. Consistent use encourages writers and image makers to use photography as a way to tell a story. Because Instagram’s photo format works in a square layout, often photography rules can be broken. A centered shot will be more dynamic in a square format than in a rectangular or vertical layout. The Instagram program comes with filters and tools to straighten, crop and adjust your photos. While these are handy and helpful, there are hundreds of free- and low-priced apps available to post-process your images. These provide even more learning opportunities and creative options. One of the most popular of these apps is Snapseed. I use Snapseed often to crop, straighten and adjust color and sharpness. It’s a great tool and easy to use.

After you have uploaded your image, you can write a description of the photo including hashtags. You can recommend links to encourage viewers to circle back to your other outlets or to promote your workshops, websites, etc.

Wikihow has a great tutorial on Instagram, how to upload it and use this social media app that is outpacing Twitter for many social media devotees. See Wikihow’s tutorial here: http://www.wikihow.com/Use-Instagram
