Anna Mindess is a food, travel, and culture writer living in Berkeley, California. Her work has appeared in The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, AFAR, Fodor’s, Oakland Magazine, Edible East Bay Magazine, among others. In 2018, she was awarded First Place by the Association of Food Journalists for her essay on 1951 Coffee, a refugee-run coffee shop.
Anna also works as an American Sign Language interpreter and seeks out Deaf-owned restaurants wherever she travels. Here is a piece she wrote recently for Lonely Planet about her favorite Deaf-owned, Moroccan restaurant in Paris, 1000&1 Signes. Anna is the author of a book about Deaf and hearing cultures, Reading Between the Signs. It is used all over the world as a textbook for interpreters and will be coming out in French and Chinese translations this fall.
