Phil Sims: An Extraordinary BATW Volunteer

Phil Sims: An Extraordinary BATW Volunteer

Diane LeBow shares this sad news about Phil Sims, who played an important volunteer role in the transformation of BATW into a widely regarded professional organization. Sandy Sims, his wife of 52 years, is a long-time BATW member and volunteer. Our condolences go to her at this time.

Phil Sims passed away December 16, at age 76, as a result of complications related to Alzheimer’s.

Phil was our BATW pro-bono attorney for a number of years, especially assisting me when I was President as we were re-writing the bylaws, and also advising us with legal issues. Phil had a successful 40-year law practice in San Jose, specializing in labor and non-profit law, and was a treasured husband, father and grandfather. For his San Jose Mercury News obituary, Sandy and her sons wrote: “Phil was generous with his humor, time, wisdom and loving support for all those lucky enough to have him in their lives. He will be truly missed.”

Sandy Sims

Sandy Sims, beloved by all of us, is a long-time BATW member. She edited our anthology Travel Stories from around the Globe, 2012 (with Elisa Southard and Erin Caslavka), was a creative Program Chair for several years, had a long career as an award-winning journalist, and was very active in BATW until Phil’s illness.

Let’s all join in sending Sandy our love and healing thoughts. We look forward to welcoming her soon at a BATW meeting.

Please consider making a donation to the wonderful Alzheimer’s Activity Center that cared for Phil in San Jose or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
