New Member: Don George

Don George is often called “the man who wrote the book on travel writing,” but in his longtime Bay Area home, he’s known better as the one-time travel editor at the San Francisco Examiner & Chronicle who published many BATW members, then moved on to Salon, Lonely Planet, and now National Geographic. Don has been a travel writer and editor for four decades and has visited more than 90 countries on six continents. He’s the author of “How to Be a Travel Writer,” the best-selling travel writing guidebook in the world, and “The Way of Wanderlust: The Best Travel Writing of Don George.” His most recent book is “Wanderlust in the Time of Coronavirus: Dispatches from a Year of Traveling Close to Home.” Don has also edited 10 award-winning literary travel anthologies, including “The Kindness of Strangers,” “A Moveable Feast,” and “An Innocent Abroad.” Don is the co-founder of the San Francisco-based literary reading series Weekday Wanderlust, and the co-founder and chairman of the annual Book Passage Travel Writers & Photographers Conference, now in its 30th year.  Little-known facts: Before becoming a travel writer and editor, he worked as a translator in Paris, a teacher in Athens, Greece, and a television talk show host in Tokyo, Japan.
