Davis is on the forefront of California’s Farm to Fork movement. The Yolo County Visitors Bureau hosts the April 13 meeting (note the second Saturday of the month) at 10 a.m. at the new Robert Mondavi Institute for Food and Wine Science on the campus of U.C. Davis. This will include a tour of the facilities and olive oil tasting. For more information, visit http://rmi.ucdavis.edu/.
After the meeting, we’ll walk (or van) to lunch at the renowned Davis Farmers Market where we’ll each get $10 in Market Bucks vouchers to spend on fresh made “naanwiches,” tamales, Indian fare, hotdogs, “sammies,” and an abundance fruit, nuts, veggies, fresh squeezed apple juice, and other beverages. The Davis Farmers Market has been called one of the ten best farmers markets in America by USA Today and U.S. News Travel.
For more information, visit www.davisfarmersmarket.org.
Following lunch, we’ll stroll next door for a guided tour of the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame, featuring bikes from the 19th century up through the present day among many exhibits. For more information, visit www.usbhof.org.
Lodging: The YCVB has arranged for press rates for Friday, April 12, and Saturday, April 13, at several Davis hotels (see list below) and in the countryside at the beautiful Inn at Park Winters B&B. Writers on assignment will be eligible for fully comped accommodations.
Participating Hotels: Aggie Inn; Comfort Suites; Hallmark Inn; Hyatt Place; Best Western Palm Court. For details, visit http://www.yolocvb.net/hotels-and-inns-davis.html/. Also: Inn at Park Winters B&B: www.parkwinters.com.
Additional Saturday afternoon activities include: a guided tour along the Davis Transmedia Art Walk. This is a first-in-the-nation collection of public art throughout the downtown and the U.C. Davis campus where many of the pieces are equipped with RFID chips. Using a scanner on your cell phone, the chips lead viewers to more information about the art, including videos of the artists at work; viewers can also leave their own messages.
