May Meeting: Computer History Museum — May 21, 2011

If you think computers are boring, the exhibit “Revolution: Computing the First 2000 Years” at the Computer History Museum will open your mind to a whole new view of these arcane devices that have changed our world.
The museum, housed in a stunning high-tech building in Mountain View (and just up the road from the Googleplex), is the world’s largest institution devoted to the artifacts and stories of the Information Age. Their new exhibit, “Revolution,” leads visitors from the age of the abacus to the smart phone, through a 25,000-square-foot, $19M extravaganza of images, artifacts, and historic and newly created videos. It has something for everyone: from technical experts and geeks, to curious non-techies who wonder how computing ended up in, among other places, their microwave ovens.
Our May Meeting will take place at the Computer History Museum, where two dozen different exhibits showcase the world of computing. From Digital Logic, to Artificial Intelligence & Robotics, to Punched Cards (remember those?), to the aforementioned “Revolution,” the exhibits are sure to lure you in with their high-tech gadgetry and sense of wonder.
The museum is arranging special one-hour docent tours of the highlights of the exhibit for BATW attendees. Afterward, members will be free to enjoy the museum at their leisure. Continental breakfast will be provided. For lunch, a cafe adjacent to the gift shop serves sandwiches, salads, coffee, etc.
In addition, we’ll be hearing about e-book publishing from Mark Coker, owner and CEO of Smashwords (www.smashwords.com), a free service that helps authors publish, promote and distribute multi-format e-books to a diverse audience.
This is a fabulous opportunity to not only learn about the museum itself (and its newest exhibit), but also to learn about the possibility of becoming a published e-book author.
