Bob Cooper‘s article about the controversy over the tule elk herds at Point Reyes National Seashore for Marin Living magazine won first place in the California Conservation Article category in the Outdoor Writers Association of California’s 2022 Excellence in Craft Awards.

Laurie McAndish King interviewed Cameron Hewitt—who has been Rick Steves’ number-two person for two decades—about Hewitt’s new book,  The Temporary European: Lessons and Confessions of a Professional TravelerYou can listen to the audio here on Journeys of Discoveryincluding Cameron’s story about professional snooping that begins, “I’ve been in your hotel room,” and reveals that Germans fold their pajamas. Cameron also tells us about the dramatic afternoon when he learned what the phrase “Making hay while the sun shines” means, and five different correct pronunciations for the word “grüezi.” Meanwhile, Laurie’s latest book, An Elephant Ate My Arm: More True Stories from a Curious Traveler, won a bronze IPPY award (Independent Publishers Book Awards) in May.

Elaine Lee taught a travel writing class at the San Francisco/Bay Area Travel and Adventure Show on May 21st at the Santa Clara Convention Center. Social media/marketing guru, Matthew Felix, joined her on stage and together they provided a top-notch insight into the world of travel journalism for the attendees of the class. The class was entitled “Travel Writing 101: Breaking into Travel Journalism.” This was the concluding event for the event producers’ national/5 city travel expo. https://travelshows.com.

Sonoma’s Cultural and Fine Arts Commission is honoring Pat Meier-Johnson as Sonoma’s 2022 Treasure Artist at a wine and hors d’oeuvres reception at Vintage House in Sonoma on June 9th at 6:30 PM. Tickets can be purchased by June 6th for $30 at this link. Pat will be speaking about the importance of the arts, culture and arts education.

A shorter version of “Carrizo Gold: Nature’s Hardest Hue to Hold”, David Laws’ story that was included in the BATW anthology, was published in the Spring 2022, San Luis Obispo County Visitor’s Guide under the title “Carrizo Gold—A Day in California’s Serengeti.”
