Faith Adiele has won first prize at the San Francisco Press Club gala for her article in Smithsonian Folklife on Oakland’s street murals and the role of Black art in protest movements.
She also received an honorable mention for her review in Hyperallergic about the 1-800 Happy Birthday Project honoring the lives of Black and Brown folks slain by police.
Over the summer, Faith was also nominated for best writing about Race & Society by the L.A. Press Club for her Alta Magazine profile of CCA alumna Lava Thomas.
David Landis recently won the first prize San Francisco Press Club Journalism Award for feature writing for a non-daily newspaper. The award is for his Gay Gourmet column, “Savoring Southeast Asia,” which ran in November, 2022 in the San Francisco Bay Times. You can read about it here.
One of Janet Rae-Dupree’s photographs was published in the New York Times Spelling Bee Forum column on Dec. 5. Shortly after a visit to Filoli in the spring, during which she took a number of photos of bees, Rae-Dupree was playing the Times’ Spelling Bee game and noticed the call for submissions. She picked her best shot and after hearing nothing for months, she was playing the game again when she saw her picture. That bee image, along with many of her other photographs, was on display through Dec. 31 at the Coastal Arts League Gallery in Half Moon Bay.
Brandy Collins published a piece about BATW colleague Elaine Lee in SF Gate last month. It was entitled: Bay Area author pioneered travel that went outside ‘mainstream appeal’ and you can read it here.
Erin Deinzer has had two recent sports-related articles published in Mount Baker Experience, a local publication for outdoor enthusiast in the western Washington region.
The first, “The Zen of Fishing,” is about reefnet fishing—a practice that originated with the native Lummi Indians (who are Coast Salish tribal members).
The second, “Wet & Wild,” is on winter surfing in Tofino, Vancouver Island, BC. It highlights the inclusion—from its inception through to today—female surfers into the sport.
