May 20 Meeting: Subbing on the Pampanito!
Ever wonder what it’s like to sleep under a torpedo as your ship races under Pacific waters? Well, wear your sea shoes and be ready to step up and over into the USS Pampanito, just returned from dry dock. Volunteer extraordinaire Rich Pelkeny will regale BATW members with his adventures restoring the Pampanito as well as present the history of the submarine and its missions during World War II. A tour of the Pampanito will follow.
The BATW meeting will take place in the new Triangle space near the USS Pampanito at Pier 45. It’s part of the San Francisco Maritime National Park that spans Aquatic Park to Pier 45.
Anatomy of a BATW Board Meeting
The BATW Board of Directors now meet virtually by telecom – saves time and travel. Our voice recognition skills have become enhanced!
The recent April 25 meeting discussed the Board’s need to fill the Treasurer position, as current Treasurer Wendy VanHatten is retiring. Board members now are meditating on this exciting opportunity.
The Board then reviewed meeting venues for months May through August:
- May 20 – Visit the USS Pampanito at San Francisco Pier 45 with presentation by intrepid volunteer Rich Pelkeny, then tour the submarine.
- June 17 – Meeting at the GLBT museum in the Castro; presentation on the 50th Anniversary of the Summer of Love.
- July 15 – Hosted lunch meeting at Savio Restaurant in Pleasanton followed by tasting and tour of Steven Kent Winery in Livermore.
- August 12 – Meeting in Fairfield/Suisun, hosted by the Convention Center; this meeting is to include olive oil tasting, winery tour and lunch.
The Board also passed a resolution about guests’ attendance at BATW Member events: “At all BATW hosted dinners, BATW shall pay for one alcoholic (or other) drink.” After this allotted one drink, attendees are on their own.
