San Francisco-based Laura Kiniry is an award-winning freelance journalist who specializes in ‘smart travel’ topics, such as tracing the twisty history of Montreal’s outdoor staircases and exploring how a former Panama penal colony became a biodiversity hotspot. She’s a Smithsonian travel correspondent (and reaccuring author of their website’s annual “Best 15 Small Towns to Visit”), and contributes regularly to such outlets as Atlas Obscura, BBCTravel, and Conde Nast Traveler, among others.
