Discover Placer County — Where Urban Energy Meets Sierra Splendor

Auburn, CA – (November 2025) Spanning approximately 1,400 square miles of Northern California’s most dynamic geography, Placer County stretches from the urban edge of Sacramento through oak-covered foothills and up into the craggy peaks, forests and alpine lakes to Lake Tahoe. A short drive from the Bay Area and Reno, Placer County offers an easy weekend getaway with access to adventure, a burgeoning wine and ale trail and incredible culinary experiences.

“Placer County truly offers a little bit of everything California is known for: vibrant city centers, charming Gold Rush towns, mountain lakes and alpine trails,” said Robert Haswell, Executive Director, Visit Placer. “Visitors can hike in the morning, enjoy local wine in the afternoon, and dine at a world-class restaurant by evening without leaving the county.”

Whether a visitor stays for a day or a lifetime, Placer County invites discovery, adventure and the unexpected. Here’s a closer look.

Auburn

Located in the foothills and steeped in Gold Rush history, Auburn blends rustic charm with modern outdoor adventure. As the county seat of Placer County, it features historic downtown streets, winding rivers and trails, and a strong sense of heritage. Auburn’s craft beverage scene is growing rapidly and Old Town and Downtown Auburn buzz with antique shops, galleries and great restaurants. For those seeking a base that is both historic and outdoors-centric, Auburn offers a true foothill experience.

Roseville

Roseville is a major regional hub for business, shopping, dining and suburban living, plus easy access to the natural assets of the county. Visit the Roseville Galleria or Fountains at Roseville for top shelf shopping or stop at Denio’s Farmers Market, a tradition since 1947, offering everything from fresh produce to antiques. Vernon Street and Old Town Roseville are must-stops for live music, art and craft beer.

Rocklin

With roots as a granite-quarry town, Rocklin has grown into a vibrant city blending recreation and distinct neighborhoods, making it an appealing location for both families and businesses. Quarry Park Adventures, a massive adventure park built into a historic granite quarry, offers non-stop adventure with zip lines, climbing walls, and aerial obstacle courses. For more on the town’s quarry history, make a stop at the Rocklin Historical Society Museum.

Lincoln

Lincoln has been one of the faster-growing cities in the county in recent years. It offers a mix of historic roots, suburban expansion and proximity to the region’s natural beauty and amenities. Quaint shops, local eateries, and wine tasting rooms dot downtown. Catch a Lincoln Potters baseball game in the summer or a concert at Thunder Valley Casino Resort.

Loomis

A more intimate town in the county’s foothill region, Loomis offers a small-town atmosphere with access to open spaces and wine country. Downtown is walkable and artsy, with boutiques, craft coffee, and local events. High-Hand Nursery & Café is a beloved destination blending gardens, art galleries, and farm-to-table dining, while the Flower Farm Inn & Café is an ideal spot to spend the night.

Colfax

Once a key railroad and Gold Rush stop, Colfax retains its historic character and small-town charm in the foothills. Rollins Lake, just outside town, is popular for boating, camping, and fishing.

Foresthill

Perched along a scenic ridge above the American River Canyon, Foresthill is a gateway to adventure – and one of the most picturesque foothill towns in the area. Once a thriving Gold Rush community, today it draws visitors for its dramatic views, mountain biking and hiking trails, river access (catch the Class IV rapids of the Middle Fork of the American River in the spring) and the Foresthill Bridge, California’s highest bridge and a landmark in its own right.

North & West Shores of Lake Tahoe

Home to the 1960 Winter Olympics, Olympic Valley (formerly Squaw Valley) is one of North America’s most iconic mountain destinations. Surrounded by towering Sierra peaks and minutes from Lake Tahoe, the valley is a year-round playground offering world-class skiing, hiking, mountain biking, and festivals. The lively village blends alpine charm with modern amenities, making it a perfect base for both adventure seekers and those who simply want to enjoy the mountain scenery.

Tahoe City is a postcard-perfect mountain town rich in natural beauty and lakeside charm. Its walkable downtown brims with boutiques, galleries, and local restaurants overlooking the lake. Year-round recreation abounds — from summer kayaking and paddleboarding to winter skiing and snowshoeing — all framed by the dazzling blue waters of Tahoe.

Northstar California Resort combines California cool with high-end luxury, on-mountain exhilaration with a sophisticated alpine village atmosphere. Halfway between one of North America’s coolest mountain towns and one of the world’s most beautiful alpine lakes.

From oak-covered foothills to high alpine lakes, Placer County spans a remarkable range of landscapes. So, whether it’s hiking, skiing, mountain biking, white-water rafting or wine tasting, there is no off-season in Placer County.

“Placer County is California in one county — urban, rural, historic, and wild. It’s where we live life at its peak,” said Haswell.
