Press Release: Jack London State Historic Park Reopens Museum

After surviving two major crises within the past year, Jack London State Historic Park will reopen the museum of famed author Jack London and wife Charmian on Wednesday, March 17, 2021.

Located in what Charmian London named “The House of Happy Walls,” the museum closed on March 14, 2020 in a county-wide effort to stop the spread of the coronavirus.  It reopened in July but had to close again when Sonoma County entered “purple” status two weeks later.

The hiking trails and outdoor features of the 1,400-acre park remained open and continue to attract a steady flow of visitors seeking the enrichment of nature and recreation.

As the pandemic raged, so did the Glass fire which began on Sept. 27, 2020, and eventually burned more than 67,484 acres in Sonoma and Napa Counties.   The park was not in the mandatory evacuation area but the fire was highly unpredictable.

On Sept. 28, a team from California State Parks began packing up the displays of priceless artifacts in the museum.  It took three days to remove the objects, which were taken to Sacramento for safe storage.  The displays and artifacts were reinstalled in early February 2021 as COVID-19 indicators improved.

“The museum has never looked better and we are looking forward to safely welcoming visitors back to explore both the history and natural beauty of our beautiful state park,” said Matt Leffert, executive director of the park.  “The museum was completely renovated and refreshed in 2018 so some returning visitors may feel like it’s a whole new experience,” he added.

Park hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.  The museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the cottage is open noon to 4 p.m.  There is a $10 per-vehicle fee for standard cars.  For further details, visit JackLondonPark.com.

Jack London State Historic Park is operated and funded by Jack London Partners, the first non-profit organization to take up management of a state park on behalf of the people of California.  Learn more about the Park on FacebookTwitterInstagram and Pinterest.
